Paragliding:
a visual journey
Follow along with us as adventurers take to the skies for the first time on a tandem, learn valuable paragliding skills or even catch a glimpse of pilots just goofing around!
What's on your Christmas wish list this year? If your list looks like mine it has a new hike and fly kit on it. If so then direct Santa over to Thermal Addict Airsports where he can pick out the new Skywalk Arriba 3 wing, a Range Air lightweight pod harness or Flex hike & fly (that's great for kiting too) and a shiny new hike and fly pack! If you let him know that it will also benefit your new year's resolution of getting in shape then he's sure to help you out. Please Santa…we've all been so very good!

Back in 2006 (?) I was visiting Bella Coola and got to ride a snowmobile around the little hills and found some cool spots to fly. As far as I know, I'm the only person ever that's been talented enough to get a sled stuck nose in pointing UP hill. Ya dog…hard core extreme or nothing at all!
Kelly rocking a forward launch at Woodside almost 10 years ago. New pilots will notice there are no black mats on launch to keep our wings nice and shiny!
As I talk to more members of the local community, it's great to hear them ask questions and gain a better understanding of paragliding and hang gliding. One thing they seem surprised about is the limit of winds we can fly in. Yesterday looked stunning - the clouds lifted enough to clear launch by late afternoon - but the winds were far too strong. Looking over from the Mount Thomm trailhead a small part of me wondered if I should risk driving over to check out launch rather than go for a hike, but watching the clouds zoom by overhead told me I'd made the right decision, no matter how tempting it looked across the valley!
Blue skies, bright green grass and the daisy from my costume could trick you into thinking this picture is from last spring and not last Saturday. Add in the 10 or so pilots who all flew into Riverside within a half hour of each other and it was a regular party in the landing field!
Since I couldn't make it to the Women's Hallowe'en Fly-In down in Chelan, Washington this year, I decided to pull out some of my bee costume to wear yesterday and have my own costumed flight! Stunning weather for November 1st, still can't get over the beauty of this place on a sunny day.
Looking through pictures from last year at this time, we were still flying in November, although will a lot more layers. Bundle up and fly on!
Another shot from Friday's hike and fly. At this point, all struggles of the hike are long forgotten.
One reason I chose to move out to the Valley from The Big City was to take advantage of living close to the mountains and to be able to catch last minute flights. Yesterday was a perfect example! Kevin (another local) called me up and convinced me to go for a hike and fly up Elk Mountain. We timed it perfectly, after the strong outflow winds of the morning and before the next weather system moved in. After an hour and a half of hiking, we arrived up top to light winds. Soon we were gliding back into the valley with huge smiles, landing softly beside our vehicles. |
